When Henry Shaw arrived to St. Louis in 1819, the city changed for the better. An ambitious young man, Shaw sold hardware and cutlery until his retirement at the age of 39. He fell in love with St. Louis and donated money and land to open the Missouri Botanical Gardens and Tower Grove Park nearly 40 years after settling in the area, and dedicated the rest of his life to the neighborhood. Because of Shaw, the neighborhood continued to build around it, making a truly wonderful area to live and enjoy city parks.
The Shaw neighborhood is this beautiful hidden gem right in the middle of the city. Most people are familiar with the Botanical Gardens, but haven’t seen the breathtaking homes, and astounding architecture that surround it. Or know the quirky antidotes that give life to the quiet streets. A stunning mix of style with a grand history to boot, Shaw has thrived in St. Louis for over 100 years.
